Book Review of Sooley by John Grisham

Old Man Jack’s Book of the Week

This is John Grisham’s latest book! I was really lucky to get it from the Library on the first day it was available ! And I am glad I did!!

Sooley is about Sam Sooleymon a young man growing up in war-torn South Sudan. Sam is a high school student who loves basketball, playing in dirt courts with no coaching and organized teams.

He tries out for the National under 18 team and makes as the last pick. His best assets are his no quit attitude and his smile! He and his team travel to the U.S.A for a show case tournament. Sooley flys for the first time and encounters a whole lot of other firsts. His team does well and his coach gets him a small college scholarship!

A whole new world opens for Sooley then tragedy strikes back at home. Sooley has his roommate and his family to support him.

It’s a story of determination, hard work and Sooley’s attitude that helps make him a success. But fairy tales only go so far or do they?

This a great book that deals with basketball and the terror of civil war, atrocities , poverty and the plight of millions of refugees. Grisham does a great job covering the subjects.

You will love this book! It makes you feel thankful for our country but also shows how spoiled we are!

This is one of the best I have read in a long time! I rate it an A!! Get this book!!
