Book Review of Anthem by Ayn Rand

I found out about Ayn Rand through reading Mark R. Levin’s book American Marxism. Also my friend, Charles Kirshner recommended reading Anthem. He said it was fabulous.

Anthem was written in the 1930’s by Rand , a college professor. The book takes you into a dark, dystopian future, a world ruled by collectivism and socialist economics. The individual is not recognized in society and the I word has been eliminated from speech.

Anthem explores the tension between collectivism and individualism. It highlights the errors associated with socialism and capitalism. Your schooling ends at 15 years of age and your job for life is selected for you. Men and and women are separated, mating happens once a year in the spring. No family life! At age 40 you are retired , put out to pasture!

Anthem compares to 1984 by George Orwell and also Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. If you like those books, you’ll like Anthem. It makes you think about our future as we skirt around the fringes of socialism, as our rights and thoughts are being compromised more every day. Is that the kind of world we want for our future and our children’s children?

I rate Anthem an A! It’s a short 100 page book you can read in an afternoon. Please read this book!
